1) Conflict- internal conflict
2) Surprise - the character's reaction to surprising circumstances- surprising details that make the character not seem like a stereotype
3) Voice - dialogue, accent, etc
4) Detail- well placed details give a sense of authenticity- from appearance to interests, hobbies, etc of a character
