Adira's short story assignment

Snowboard White
Once upon a time there was a little girl who loved the winter. She loved the snow, she loved the way it fell, how it felt playing in it, and just about everything else about it. This little girl would wait all year long for the snow to come. Her name was Whitney White. Her hair was ice blond and her skin was as pale as a sheet and she had the rosiest red cheeks anyone had ever seen. She lived with her father. Her mother had died when Whitney was a little girl and her father didn’t talk about her a lot. Whitney missed her mother terribly. At night, she would take the picture of her down from beside her bed and stare at the women that she hardly knew. She would think, someday I’m going to be a real snow princess like her mother was. Every few years a girl wins a snowboarding competition and is crowned the snow princess. Whitney White’s mother had been the best anyone had ever seen and that’s what Whitney fell asleep to almost every night dreaming the same dream of one day being as successful as her mother.
Whitney White jumped off a cliff, did a 360, sailed through the air and started making her descent off the top of the mountain. Life was good she mused, working at the job she loved, in the thing she loved most......SNOW, ever since she was little her dad would call her his little snow princess. That was before he married that wicked woman, with raven black hair who was as vain about her looks as he was not. Her step mother spent days at the spa that she opened called "Mirror Mirror." Just as Whitney was in the middle of her daydreaming she heard someone behind her scream "LOOK OUT" then her world went black.
Whitney White hears beeping and slowly opened one ice blue eye then the other. She looks around the eerily white room and spots her father looking anxious and worried sick.
"DAD what happened?" cried Whitney “Why am I in the hospital?”
"You took a very hard fall when a snowboarder rammed into you” he took a long sigh
“Why do you look so sad? I’m ok now!”
“Because sweetie, the doctor’s said you may not be able to snowboard again?" he almost cried out
“WHAT!!” sobbed Whitney and started sobbing into her father shirt leaving behind a waterfall of tears.
“You’re going to come stay with us until you get better. Ok.”
“Ok” Whitney mumbled. She didn’t know what was worse not being able to snowboard or being under the same roof as her wicked step mother, Felicia.
A month later
Whitney pulled through the gate. After going to the doctor for a checkup, she was not in a great mood the doctor had said her leg had healed nicely though she would probably never be able to snowboard again. She walked up to the door that still seemed so foreigner even though she had been living there for at least a month.
“Shoot” she said out loud to the crisp air. She had forgotten her keys. Again.
She rang the knocker and Felicia answered. Looking as impressively young as anyone could at her age. And looking more plastic as a Barbie.
Felicia gave Whitney an air kiss and said welcome as if Whitney was the one who hadn’t lived in the house for a month.
“Come dahhhhhhhhhhling its dining time let us sit down.” She said in her over enunciated southern twang.
A few minutes later Whitney was sitting at the table looking very interested in her cup of cranberry juice. She was wondering why it was always so awkward and why you could hear the forks scraping against the plates. Felicia finally broke the silence
"I was so sorry to hear about or injury, I just got back from Paris last night and you were already fast asleep. So sorry I couldn’t make it down to the hospital. I was just so overwhelmed, I fired the cook. Sooooooo hard to find good help these days."
All Whitney could muster an "s'ok"
Felicia continued "So I hear from your father that you’re out of work. What do you plan on doing? You can’t stay here forever."
Whitney didn’t even pretend to be insulted. She learned not to be insulted by her. "I’m not sure, still exploring my options" but what she really meant that she was out of work and would not admit that she needed the money. She would never admit to her father that it may have been smart to go to University, since there last fight Whitney vowed she would never take any money because Felicia would never let her live it down.
"Oh well just your luck! I bumped into Dr. John Hopkins the other day, he’s one of the major sponsor for the Charity I host a tea for every year. We were talking about how hard it is to find good help these days, for him especially since he has seven kids and he’s wife tragically passed away a few years ago.  I mentioned that I have a nanny for him!"
She looked at Whitney expectantly, with a huge grin on her face.
"YOU!!!!"
Whitney spit out the juice that was in her mouth "WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT!!!!"
Felicia continued as though Whitney hadn’t spoken at all "He needs someone to live in, so you don’t need to worry about rent, all you have to do is look after his seven little kids. Oh and you start tomorrow."

With that Whitney White fainted
Whitney White walked up the front steps and rang the doorbell. Just at that moment a football hit her on the head and she fell back. When she came around she heard voices talking right on top of her.
"I think she’s the new nanny"
"What! No way she’s too pretty to be"
"I (sneeze) think we should wake her up (sneeze)"
"Well no kidding stupid"
"She opened her eyes and saw save faces staring back at her
"Hi there I’m..."
"sneeze"
"sleepy"
"happy"
"dorky"
"dancey"
"grumpy"
Roof roof came a bark "and that’s barky" said one of them.
“Ok. let’s get inside” said Whitney who was more than a little confused.
When they got inside it was a disaster. Clothes everywhere, furniture turned upside down, a frog and rabbit running around. It was a total disaster!”
Whitney didn’t even have time to say anything. Just then handsome looking man came through the door. He was about 30 years old with dark hair and striking blue eyes. And a tall strong build.
“You must be Whitney White. I know it’s a total disaster but please help me. This is what I expect; the children in bed by 9, a healthy dinner on the table, a clean house always and always cookies in the cookie jar. He said with a half grin “I love cookies. Also I’m hardly home so I expect everything to be run in perfect condition”
“Ok. Nice to meet you too. Sir.”
“Good.” now the children will show you your room and off he went to his study and closed the door.
The next morning Whitney was up by 6. She made French toast, pancakes, fruit and eggs all by 7. Then woke the kids up got them dressed and all sitting down and eating breakfast, she then helped then find the missing shoes or the homework that they swore they left in there school bag but just disappeared overnight. By 8 O’clock  they were all out of the house looking sort of normal. The house was eerily quiet the only people at home with her were Barky and Sleepy the 3 year old.
Whitney was exhausted but forced herself to continue.  Once she had cleaned up from breakfast and had put Sleepy down to take a nap which didn’t take very long. She then took a real look and the kids rooms and the rest of the house. It was a total disaster; it looked like a hurricane had hit it. Whitney really wanted to keep this job, so she blasted the top 20 Disney songs and got straight to work.
She moped, swept, made the beds, scrubbed, polished, folded, and organized from top to bottom. She played and fed Sleepy and Barky. By the time Whitney was done the kids were due back very soon.  So she cut, and chopped, and simmered and boiled and mixed until by the time the kids got home there were chocolate chips waiting on the counter and a roast beef and potatoes in the oven. The children were shocked. They probably never saw the floors in at least a year.
After they had eaten dinner, Whitney made them do their homework, then they played and watched TV, then they took showers and went to bed.
Whitney was cleaning up from dinner when John Hopkins came through the door he was in a pretty happy mood, he’d had a great day. Helping people and doing what doctor’s do.
He watched Whitney clean up the kitchen slowly and very tiredly.
“Hi” he said
Whitney jumped back taken aback “Oh you scared me! How was your day? I left some dinner out for you to eat. Here you go.” she set the plate down on the table
“Did you eat anything yet?” he questioned. She looked like she hadn’t eaten all day
Whitney hesitated then finally said “Ummm, no”
“So sit down. You made it after all”
They sat down in silence. John finally broke the silence.
“So how are the kids?”
Whitney spent the rest of the meal telling him all about her day and the funny things that the kids said. When there were silences Whitney mused about how comfortable it felt. They finally said good night and Whitney and John both went to bed with smiles on their faces.
The next day the same thing repeated itself and for weeks it went on like this. And every night after all the kids were asleep Whitney and John would sit down and they would talk about their day. With each passing day their bond would grow stronger and stronger. Then one day something happened that would change everything.
It was one of those mornings. The kind that was very stressful. The kids were all grumpy and were missing everything they needed Whitney didn’t have time to make breakfast so everyone had cereal and cold milk which made them grumpy having gotten used to her home cooked meals. By the time they were all out the door and late she began her work that was more than usual since all the kids were all in a rush. To top it off Sleepy wouldn’t sleep and Barky was running around. By the time the house looked half decent. The kids were home and she through some pasta in a pot and they rushed and none of the Children wanted to do their homework or take showers and by the time they were in bed and the house was quiet Whitney felt like ripping her hair out.
Just when Whitney was sitting down for the first minute of silence John comes through the door in a very bad mood. He’d had a fight with one of his colleagues, about the right way to treat one of the patients.
“Hi” he said in a grumble
“Ohhhh don’t you start being grumpy also. I hardly had a minute of silence since this morning. And it’s been a crazy morning.” But since she was so overwhelmed it came out more like; “ohdontyoustart beinggrumpyalsoIhardlyhadaminuteofsilencesincethismormingAnditsbeenacrazymorning
To which John replied “Well all I wanted was to come home to a good meal and some pleasant company. You know I didn’t have the greatest day either!”
Whitney scoffed “Ohhh you think I have the easiest job in the world and you just work so hard well guess what I’m having a hard time to. The kids miss you so much they hardly get to see you at all”
“Your just the nanny what do you know.”
The look she gave would have broken even the evil step mother she always talked about heart. Her eyes clouded with tears and ran out of the house.
John sat at the table hating himself for being such a jerk. It felt like a second but was more like an hour.
He decided he should go look for Whitney. He searched the impeccably clean house from top to bottom. When he was about to give up he went to look outside he saw the light on in the car. Her head was down and he thought maybe she saw him coming and pretended to be asleep. But then he saw she wasn’t moving and inch. John was getting frantic so he took a hammer from the garage and smashed the window. He pulled out of the car and put her on the grass. He thought maybe she was still faking it so maybe if he talked to her she’d wake up.

“Whitney, you’ve become more then a nanny, you never were just a nanny from the moment I saw you the prettiest girl in the world I knew I was in love. I love you Whitney I truly do” she still didn’t move so he did the only thing we could think of. He kissed her and slowly Whitney began to stir she opened one eye then the other.
“Whaaaaa the?” she said very confused
“Oh, thank god! What happened?”
“Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhh now I remember I took a p.m. medicine because I wasn’t feeling well and I must’ve just been so tired I fell asleep”
“Whitney. I love you!”
“No John. I love you”
Then they kissed and lived happily ever after!!!!
